Software Engineer

HEARD is looking for an experienced engineer who can help design, prototype, and develop features that make HEARD easier and more effective the more schools use it. Our goal is to make communicating and consuming information at school less cumbersome, frustrating and overwhelming and more agile, empowering and useful.

We are an early-stage company that is pre-funded. This is a full-time or part-time, equity-based position until the first round of funding is raised.

The Hard Skills

  • You know Ruby-on-Rails & Postgres or MySQL on the back-end, HTML/CSS/Javascript (JQuery) on the front end (MVC app). Full Stack.

  • You write clean, efficient, maintainable code.

  • You have experience working in an agile development environment.

  • You love clean code (think Rubocop) and write lots of RSpec tests.

  • Prior experience with online payment systems would be useful.

The Soft Skills

  • You might be a parent who understands the pain of communicating at your child’s school.  Or you might be a former teacher who knows the issues that educators and administrators face day to day. You want to help solve problems in education and believe higher family engagement in student learning is one way that can help.

  • You are an engineer and can work across multiple platforms.

  • You understand user-centered design, empathetic driven design.

  • You’re a collaborator and enjoy problem solving.

What You’ll be Doing

  • Developing new features, such as a fundraising tool to attract new users and growth.

  • Solving challenging problems.

  • Working in an agile environment writing code and tests.

  • Maintaining existing code, fixing bugs.

  • Keeping existing products up-to-date with the latest technologies, architectures, and standards.

  • Working alongside a very small founding team.

The Why

  • You’re interested in working for a mission-driven, social impact company from the ground up.

  • You can work for equity until funded and want to be invested in the company’s mission and goals.

  • You enjoy working on a small scrappy team. The founders are all parents who are looking for partners who understand the need the product is designed to solve; increasing family engagement and building stronger school communities.  You don’t have to be a parent, but it helps to understand our users and the environment of pre-K-elementary schools.
